The Spanish Conquest of the “New World” was a tremendous success for Spain. The biggest question is how was it possible? When they arrived and began their expedition they were immensely outnumbered by the Aztecs and Incas. So how were so few men able to devastate these vastly populated empires? What made people like Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro able to carry out their goals? how did they accomplish their mission? How did they achieve victory against such numerical odds?

  1. Yes politics did play its part but I think Western introduced diseases were the most devastating for native populations. Something like the plagues that were introduced into Europe from Central Asia through the trade routes. Those devastated half the European population in the middle ages.

    • I agree Ian! I like to call it unintentional genocide. It is a shame that back then so many had to die because we did not have enough information or knowledge on how to prevent and treat these diseases from becoming an epidemic and killing millions 🙁
